The Death Posture

“…belief freed from conception merges desire with the infinite, creates a variety of Self-knowing (which is also Supreme Self-Love) and transcends the two poles of objectivity and subjectivity, discovering in between the two, the Real Self, Kia, the Atmospheric ‘I’.” - From ‘AOS and the Zos Kia Cultus‘, in 'The Magickal Revival' by Kenneth Grant.

“The law of Kia is its ever original purpose, undetermined…All conception is a denial of the Kia…The offspring of ourselves, we are the conflict of what we deny and assert of the Kia.” - AOS

“If you could truly believe, we should realise the virtue of it. We are not free to believe…however much we so desire, having conflicting ideas to first exhaust. Sigils are the art of believing; my invention for making belief organic, ergo, true belief.” - AOS

Spare’s way to the ‘Atmospheric I’ in general, and to any given ‘organic’ belief in particular, would appear to be what he called the Death Posture.

These are Spare’s Death Posture instructions from The Book of Pleasure:

“Lying on your back lazily, the body expressing the condition of yawning, suspiring while conceiving by smiling, that is the idea of the posture. Forgetting time with those things which were essential- reflecting their meaninglessness, the moment is beyond time and its virtue has happened.

“Standing on tip-toe, with the arms rigid, bound behind by the hands, clasped and straining the utmost, the neck stretched- breathing deeply and spasmodically, till giddy and sensation comes in gusts, gives exhaustion and capacity for the former.

“Gazing at your reflection till it is blurred and you know not the gazer, close your eyes (this usually happens involuntarily) and visualize. The light (always an X in curious evolutions) that is seen should be held on to, never letting go, till the effort is forgotten, this gives a feeling of immensity (which sees a small form ), whose limit you cannot reach. This should be practised before experiencing the foregoing. The emotion that is felt is the knowledge which tells you why.”

It seems to me that, as a set of practice instructions, these three paragraphs should be taken in reverse order. First, the gazing at one’s reflection in order to achieve the ‘feeling of immensity’; secondly, the stressed standing position designed to produce exhaustion, and thirdly the lying on one’s back, ‘suspiring while conceiving by smiling’, which would seem to be the Death Posture proper.

With reference to the gazing exercise, what happens when I gaze fixedly at my reflection, or at any other object, and then close my eyes is:
1. The fading after-image of what I’ve been looking at.
2. ‘Phosphenes’: these, I believe, vary from individual to individual. In my case I tend to get a sort of amorphous phosphorescent flux, sometimes settling down to a series of diminishing blobs with a roughly common focus.
3. Hypnapompic images, usually extremely fleeting and vague.

What I DON’T get is “an X in curious evolutions”, which Spare says “always” occurs. I assume that when he writes of “the light…that is seen” he means phosphenes, but of course I may be wrong about this.

If anyone can clarify any of this, or can offer any hints, tips, anecdotes or experiences relevant to this point, or to the topic of the Death Posture in general, I’d love to hear from them.

Worked great the first night, mission accomplished. Second night, same intent, complete flop. I didn't know they weren't reusable. I don't think the method of charging varied all that much, I let it loose into the general populace as well as focused on it myself. Any ideas? Any similar experiences?

I would hope not but delete away. It's just so quiet here.

Here we go:

Has anyone ever utilized techniques such as Spare's Automatic
Drawing, dream induction, etc. to manifest entities from other traditions. In my situation it would specifically be the vodoun loas and goetic demons..

Has anyone else used these techniques to communicate with such entities, what about entities of "place" I think Spare had interest in such things but I don't have a specific quote to offer up as I am not so much of a Spare philospher as a Sparean practioner, if that makes sense.

I think communicating with entities of space/place can be an interesting experience, especially when one works with getting them allied. I've worked with the new energies in my home and I hope to convince the imps of this threshold to keep the spiders out this spring.. Last year someone pissed Baron Samedi and we got a slight plague of Brown Recluse spiders..

Anyways.. not that I believe any of the above, I'll probably rely on a can of Raid and a heavy shoe ;)

but you can never be *too* dismissive of the spirits of a place, or can you?

black and white

hello.....this tribe is fabulous...so incredible that it exists..........i added a new picture to the gallery.....does anyone know a site w/ more examples of spare's black and white drawings?......it seems, even though his work is so hard to find we adore it all the more..........and each new discovery of these precious things from the past is like finding a hidden room in the attic......it may have been there all along......but only after the acient wallpaper began to peel.....and the cracks in the plaster began to form a mysteriously familiar shape.....and you had a fit of ripping and tearing apart your wall.......was the secret door revealed to you......it makes for a magical excitement w/ each new amazing discovery........and we shall be like little birdies wispering hints... carried to each other on an timeless twisting wind....thank you for sharing....naiaddy

"Earth: Inferno" DVD released

This is the first film made based upon a work by Spare and we are delighted to make it available in DVD format. With a total running time of 11 minutes, in full colour, the film evokes the strange theatre and sexuality of Spare's first short book. Due to the nudity
and sexual references this film has been given a 15 certificate by the British Board of Film Censors.

"Earth: Inferno" movie (Omphalos: Bath -U.K.)

Hi there!
If you live close to Bath (U.K.), then I'd like to tell you that a short movie titled "Earth: Inferno" -which I filmed with another director- will be screened at tha Omphalos event.
This movie was inspired by Austin Osman Spare's "Earth: Inferno".
If you have been at Occulture 2004, then it's the same one they screened there, except that we've remastered the sound.

Greetings everyone;this is to give an update on the Magickal Fair in Bath,2005

The event will be held in Walcot Chapel, which is in the centre of Bath but enough off the beaten track to have some leeway as far as noise/'personal expression' etc.
Its an old chapel, built on a mortuary in the centre of a small graveyard in what was purportedly the original centre of Bath.
We're being sponsored by the Annual Witchcraft Seminar, which takes a lot of financial strain away and leaves more scope to play.

The event will be run from the 25th of April to the 1st of May.

The Fair will be opening at 1.30 on the Monday afternoon; the most auspicious time for its birthing, according to its astrological chart.

Mogg Morgan will do an opening ritual on Monday the 25th of April, with an accompanying performance piece .

The same day we will erect a fetish tree, interactive , that will be added to by those that wish to.

During the week there will be a 'magickal' art exhibition, and late afternoon and evening there will be talks/performance pieces.

The exhibition will consist of pieces by both professional and amateur magickal artists; some pieces are paintings or pen and ink drawings,and we have a series of fetish dolls, as well as other three dimensional work.

I'm also working on having a series of photos of tattoos with a magickal slant on display.

We have been offered the loan of several pieces of art work by well known, now deceased, artists.
The logistics and practicality of accepting this offer, insurance and security wise of this are still being worked out.

Thus far we have a variety of performers we are working into our timetable; the medieval band 'Sulis' ,a divinely androgynous veiled dancer performing to 'demonica electronica' amongst others; plus as a resident 'Brain Wave Generator'' for those who feel such cerebral explorations are in order.

Wednesday evening Julian Vayne and Greg Humphries will be taking a workshop in 'Rearranging the World with Chaos Magick'.

On the Friday and Saturday daytime Mishlen Linden, from New Orleans will be taking a workshop in Nu Icon Making, instructing and guiding in the making of icons/spirit houses from bone/feather/wood etc.

Friday evening Gavin Semple will be doing a performance and written piece as well as introducing a viewing of 'Earth Inferno'.

There will be a break from the finish of the workshop on Saturday whilst things are vamped up for the evening decoration wise, then we will have appropriate entertainment for the Saturday night before Beltane.

Sunday we'll be having general Beltane (traditional and interpretative) festivities. Mishlen will do a closing ritual.

The Logomachy

As far as I know it's only in Zos Speaks but I have been reading The Logomachy for ages now. It's 800+ statements organized in groups of about 5-10. They all have a common theme or thread per group. There is a small version in the beginning of Ethos I think. One of the books in that series has it anyway.
I read a section at a time, and then let it process. It has do done alot for me. No one else teaches these things or talks that way. Good luck having conversations that good.
I have heard from inside sources that words and things were changed from the originals for it but it is still fantastic. Some people are calling it butchered and what not, and I don't know anywhere near all the facts, but from what I have seen it's not that changed. Just a little more understandable.

Kia; The absolute freedom which is being free is mighty enough to be " reality " and free at any time: therefore is not potential or manifest ( except as its instant possiblity ) by ideas of freedom or " means, " but by the Ego being free to recieve it, by being free of ideas about it and by not believing.the less said of it ( Kia ) the less obscure is it. Remember evolution teaches by terrible punishments- that conception is ultimate reality but not ultimate freedom from evolution.

Virtue: Pure Art.

Vice: Fear, belief,faith, control, science, and the like.

Self-Love: A mental state, mood or condition caused by the emotion of laughter becoming the principle that allows the Ego appreciation or universal association in permitting inclusion before conception.

Exhaustion: That state of vacuity brought by exhausting a desire by some means of dissipation when the mood corrisponds to the nature of the desire,i.e., when the mind is worried because of the non-fulfilment of such desire and seeks relief. By seizing this mood and living, the resultant vacuity is sensitive to the subtle suggestion of the Sigil.

share dreams & synchronicities involving Spare.

one night i dreamed that i was at home in my living room with a friend. i don't actually own any Austin Spare artwork in waking life but in this dream i owned 3 of his drawings, hungon the outside of the door leading into my bedroom...& just simply noticing that i had those is the only thing that the dream seems to have had with Spare...the rest of it has nothing very obvious directly to do with him, except in the broad generality of paranormal phenomena...a strange object appeared suspended in midair close to one of the walls. it appeared to me as a boxlike structure, & to my friend as a pair of spinning disks. he identified it as a thoughtform & explained that it hovered this way because of a magnetic force. i don't remember anything else.
