  • In Grants' Images and Oracles of A.O.S, page 11- "An art student named Budd, who had been ar the Royal Collage at the same time as Spare and who latter taught art in several well known schools described the Spare of those days as "a fair creature resembling a Greek god, curly haired, proud, self-willed, practising the black arts and taking drugs"
He went on being proud and practising the 'black arts', but he gave up the use of drugs in favor of his own system of sorcery, his own brand of dreaming..."

        for ever animal

I really appreciate this paragraph from the first link above :

Spare could be choosy about commissions, even turning down Adolf Hitler In 1936 one of Hitler's aides at the German Embassy in London bought a self-portrait by Spare, which he thought bore a strikng resemblance to the Fuhrer. When Hitler saw it, he agreed and invited Spare to Berlin to paint his portrait. Spare turned him down, replying: "Only from negations can I wholesomely conceive you. For I know of no courage sufficient to stomach your aspirations and ultimates. If you are superman, let me be for ever animal."

I think this would still hold as an appropriate response to the current droves of so-called "occult fascists" that pay lip service to spare while idolizing hitler....

Touche' nx. Very good point. I thought that was interesting when I read it as well but the point you made didnt cross my mind. I just recently joined this tribe because someone I think is really smart is on it and I thought I'd check it out. I have only read about A O Spare in some book by Disinformation and a bit online and think he's very much an enigma. It should be interesting to learn what his beliefs or philosophies or whatever were. My memory isnt the best and it's been a while but I remember reading something about a painting that was in storage for many years and kept hidden by its owners because it was purported to "move" and was some sort of portal into a mysterious hidden world that most people are afraid to explore?

also, getting props from John Singer Sargent says loads...

ever see the Triumph Of Religion murals at the Boston Public Library? I'll try to dig up the link tomorrow - the "Pagan Gods" mural is absolutely mind-blowingly gorgeous.

"boy that says good things about Spare's character that he turned down Hitler. "

You wonder what he would have done if he had been born German.

well, he seemed to have a strong personality - I would wager he would have left Germany, like some other notable freethinkers.

                but of course, who knows?
